Rethink the toilet.
Consider the toilet and the activities that surround it.
Abi and myself decided after considering the loo, the environment, the
activities and the emotional side, that it was the emotional side that
interested us. We thought that the toilet worked quite well but what interested
us were the other activities that are carried out in the toilet.
We use
the toilet as a refuge both in the private home and in public. When a
woman crys in the workplace, she runs to the toilet for privacy and locks
herself in a cubicle. When a man wants peace from his family, he locks
himself in the toilet and reads. The toilet is a personal space.
When in public toilets it is very hard to have confidence in the toilet
cubicle as a private area. We are always conscious of the lock not working
or of someone barging in if there is no lock at all. Abi and I wanted
to create an object that could provide that feeling of confidence in a
personal space.
Lock and Key: The object that we created is a large hand that was inspired
by the gesture made when using a public toilet without a lock. We put
out our hand so as to stop an intruder entering. This object, which would
be carried by the individual, would give the user the feeling of security
by stretching it across the door and the frame.
