a bio-cycle unit in a kitchen

The Bio-cycle is a product that recycles household organic waste 'on site'. Taking inspiration for this unorthadox product from white goods, it is designed to fit into the modern kitchen enviornment.
Waste management and disposal is a large problem both in the home and in the garden. Existing methods of waste disposal are harmful to the environment. Recycling is the best way of dealing with waste. Vermi-composting uses worms to accelerate the process of decomposition. This process can be carried out in the home by individuals.

vermi-composting process
Biodegradable waste holds the highest percentage of household waste. Vermi-composting uses earthworms to turn organic waste into very high quality compost. Worms ingest organic waste and gain nourishment on the micro organisms that are eating the organic waste. 1 poud of mature worms will consume up to half a pound of food waste a day. Faster than regular composting, it takes one month compared to six. Worms reduce the mass of organic waste by 90% in 24hrs. They compost contains no desease pathogens and works best in an alkaline PH level. A worm bin is a self contained system with no odour, no attraction of pests and requires little space, labour and maintenence. Worms ideally work between 10-30 degrees C.

The product
The biocycle gives the vermi-composter a clean image. The tray, situated under the work surface, is large enough to contain one days organic waste. Waste is evenly distrabuted in the rotating drum by the hopper to allow for even decomposition.Compost and liquid is collected. This could be used in the users garden or collected by the local council to cultivate community spaces.
